True Prevention Means More Than Early Disease Detection

July 11, 2008

An ounce of prevention when it comes to health is worth its weight in gold. I admire the handful of patients that come through our medical practice that don’t have a disease or symptoms they want to get rid of.  They are interested in developing a healthcare partnership with their Naturopathic Medical Doctor and a lifestyle plan to optimize their health and well-being.

And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are realizing the power of this approach to healthcare on a national scale.  They have launched the “Healthiest Nation Campaign” in hopes of elevating our country’s health ranking.  According to the CDC, we don’t even rank in the top 10…and on one list it’s 26th; on another, 47th.

Julie Gerberding, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says  the US puts “way too much emphasis on treating disease rather than protecting health in the first place.”

According to Gerberding, when we talk about prevention in this country, we are usually talking about early detection of disease, and that’s secondary prevention.  She feels that “we’re not really talking about the things we need to do before we get to the doctor’s office.”

To do that, we must get back to the basic foundation of a healthier lifestyle. Simple steps include:

  • Healthier diet
  • More movement
  • Less TV
  • Less video games
  • More quiet time in nature

Doctor moves beyond ‘fixing the broken piece’

July 10, 2008

This article discusses the transition that one primary care doctor made from a typical medical practice, seeing 25-30 patients per day to an integrative medical practice where she focuses on treating the underlying cause of symptoms rather then applying a band-aid to the problem.  She took on line courses and three one-week sessions to learn about integrative medicine.

Unfortunately many people are not aware that Licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctors practice primary care medicine and integrative medicine as the base of their practice. To properly practice this type of medicine Licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctors spend four years in medical school, beyond their undergraduate work, and take medical boards in order to receive their license and practice integrative medicine. Big difference. This specialized group of physicians is actually trained on how to practice integrative, holistic, natural medicine for four years, on campus (not on line) interacting with the leaders in the field of integrative medicine throughout their medical education.

I seem to end up with a lot of patients in our practice who went to a traditional MD, like the doctor in this article, that then “converted” to a more holistic approach to medicine.  They are usually patients with complex chronic illnesses, that did not see the results they were looking for when working with an MD who learned about natural medicine through a satellite program or continuing education classes.  In these cases, fixing their diet and lifestyle and testing for heavy metals while using acupuncture didn’t cut it.

Doctors like Kinigakis, the physician highlighted in the article, serve an important role in our evolving health care system and it is great that they are tipping the scale back to a more balanced view of the body and how it can heal itself.

Experience with patients, and with colleagues like Kinigakis, that I teach around the country, reveals that licensed  Naturopathic Medical Doctors (NMDs or NDs) who received their education at a four year CNME approved Naturopathic Medical School, have a different level of training and a more in-depth understanding and appreciation for how to use the tools that natural medicine has to offer.  It seems that NMDs are operating in a different paradigm entirely, rather then trying to fit natural medicine into the existing and prevailing medical paradigm of our times.  And that leads to a different level of success when working with  patients who are ready to heal.

Cholesterol Lowering Drugs for Kids?

July 9, 2008

The American Academy of Pediatrics issued a new recommendation on Monday that statin medications should be used in some children to help prevent heart attacks later in life.  And many pediatricians are furious at the Academy for making this recommendation.

High cholesterol, even when it runs in the family, can be lowered to a level that reduces heart attack risk..without taking a statin drug.  There is also no proof that statin medications prevent heart attacks in children.  And even in adults, we know that people who take statin drugs get heart attacks and people who do not take statin drugs get heart attacks. Furthermore, statin medications deplete the body of heart protective nutrients such as CoQ10. They also block the formation of essential hormones that are important for lifelong health.

As a doctor who treats children, it is concerning that the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of a statin medication, Pravachol, in children without evidence of the safety of using the medication at a young age, before the hormone system has fully matured.

Simple changes in diet and lifestyle are a wise first step towards preventing heart attacks later in life, especially for children.  Here are some basic steps to take:

  • Remove ALL trans fatty acids from the diet. This involves reading labels and looking for the words “partially hydrogenated oil,” “hydrogenated oils,” or “trans fatty acids.” Even if the label says “zero trans fats” there can still be trace amounts found in the product. So read the ingredient list before offering the food to a child. Hydrogenated fats increase your risk for heart disease and heart attacks and also damages blood vessels.
  • Limit sugar intake
  • Include one serving of raw vegetables or fruits in every meal. When you look at a child’s plate, there should be something raw on that plate- whether it is apple slices, salad, carrots, or any other raw fruit or vegetable that the child will eat.
  • Encourage at least 1 hour of physical activity per day
  • Teach children how to handle stress in a healthy way. Set aside one hour of stress-relieving activity per day-through quiet time away from computers, TV and video games. Activities such as yoga, playing with an animal, or spending time in nature are all proven methods to relieve stress.
  • Have your child evaluated for nutritional deficiencies by a licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctor.  Nutrient deficiencies like Vitamin D3 and Omega 3 Fatty Acids can increase a child’s risk of heart disease.

In the spirit of doing what is in the best interest of our children…

Vitamin D Levels in Mom Affect Dental Health in Child

July 8, 2008

Canadian researchers at the University of Manitoba presented the results of the first study ever done to evaluate the impact of a mother’s vitamin D status during pregnancy on the dental health of her child. The researchers analyzed the vitamin D status in 206 pregnant women in their second trimester and found that only 21 of them had adequate vitamin D levels.  Vitamin D levels were related to prenatal vitamin use and consumption of vitamin D rich foods. The infants born to mothers with low vitamin D levels had an increased risk of tooth enamel defects and early childhood tooth decay.

As a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, I see pregnant women and test them for their vitamin D status. Oftentimes their levels are low and they are placed on a prenatal nutritional program that includes supplementation with Vitamin D3, above and beyond what is in their prenatal vitamin.  I also encourage them to spend 10-20 minutes in the sun, with their bellies exposed, per day.  Sun exposure can increase vitamin D3 levels in the blood however some women lack the appropriate enzymes necessary to convert sun exposure into adequate vitamin D in their bloodstream.

Food sources of vitamin D can be difficult to find and to consume on a daily basis. Cod liver oil, egg yolk, and foods fortified with vitamin D are the most accessible to women. The flesh of fish such as salmon and tuna are also rich sources but I do not recommend that pregnant or nursing women consume these fish due to their high concentration of heavy metals such as mercury.

This research was presented on July 4th, 2008 at the 86th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research. It was funded by the Manitoba Medical Service Foundation, the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, the Dentistry Canada Fund, the University of Manitoba, and Dairy Farmers of Canada.

Green Tea Protects Heart Arteries

July 5, 2008

A new research study, led by Dr. Nikolaos Alexopoulos of Athens Medical School in Greece, shows that drinking green tea keeps heart arteries flexible and relaxed-allowing the body to better withstand changes in blood pressure. Researchers compared the effects of drinking 6 grams of green tea per day (3-4 cups), with drinking a diluted caffeine beverage and water. What they found was that those individuals that drank the green tea daily had more relaxed and pliable blood vessels, as demonstrated on ultrasound. And the effects were cumulative and long-lasting. The researchers assessed the green-tea drinkers’ blood vessels two weeks after daily consumption of the tea and discovered that their blood vessels were more dilated then they were at the beginning of the study.

The flavonoids found in green tea reduce inflammation, relax blood vessels, prevent blood clot formation, and act on the endothelial lining of the vessels. Green tea also contains antioxidants that demonstrate cancer-protective effects.

I enjoy green tea extract each morning, as part of a powdered greens blend we carry at LTP Natural Medical Center , that promotes healthy immune function and detoxification.

A Low-Cost Alternative to Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplements

June 19, 2008

The Wall Street Journal just published a report indicating that the major increase in use of omega 3 fatty acids is leading to a potential shortage in supply. This is triggering efforts by major companies such as Monsanto to produce genetically engineered seeds that produce the omega 3 oils.  Hold on a second…there is NO long term evidence that consuming omega 3 fatty acids form genetically modified foods is safe.  Before drinking the Kool-Aid and consuming omega 3 oils at any cost (even to the detriment of our long term health), you might want to try not overeating…

Overeating will cause an omega 3 deficiency.  There is mounting evidence that eating a balanced healthy diet (similar to the one laid out in yesterday’s blog post) is a good way to prevent an omega 3 deficiency.

The website www.sicksyndrome.com has medical seminars posted that discuss inflammation in the brain and depression (Sickness Syndrome Depression), and the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids and how eating too many calories will increase inflammation in the body and cause an omega 3 deficiency.

Non-fish oil sources of DHA and EPA are found in algae products available at the health food store.  The reason fish oil is high in DHA and EPA is because of the algae that the fish eat!  Other alternatives to fish oil are hemp seed and flax seed oils. The only challenge there is that the body still needs to convert those oils into the usable DHA and EPA and the process is inefficient.  In our medical practice we use products containing Martek’s algae-sourced fatty acids and also recommend that patients use Udo’s Essential Blend with DHA.

“Big Breakfast” Means More Weight Loss in the Long Run

June 18, 2008

New research shows that women who eat large breakfasts lose a lot more weight in the long run then women who eat a smaller breakfast.  In this study, presented yesterday at The Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in San Francisco, and led by  Dr Daniela Jakubowicz, MD of the Hospital de Clinicas in Caracas, Venezuela, Forty-six women followed a very low carbdiet with a small breakfast for eight months (1085 calories per day, 17g of carbohydrates, 51g protein and 78g of fat).  A second group of 48 women followed a “big breakfast diet” (total of 1240 calories a day, 46g of fat, 97g of carbs and 93g of protein) that included a 610 calorie breakfast (58g of carbs, 47g of protein and 22g of fat); a 395 calorie lunch (34g carbs, 28g protein and 13g fat); and a 235 calorie dinner (5g carbs, 18g protein and 26g fat).

In the first four months of the program, the low carb dieters lost an average of 28 pounds and the “big breakfast” dieters lost an average of 21 pounds.  HOWEVER, during the next four months, which was focused on weight maintenance, the low carb dieters GAINED an average of 18 pounds while the “big breakfast” dieters LOST an additional 16 pounds.

Basically, the very low carb diet only works in the short term.  At our medical clinical , we prescribe a weight loss program that allows for long term results, because it is NOT a very low carb diet but rather a diet that balances blood sugar and hormone levels.  And that is why over 300,000 people on this diet (which was designed by a Naturopathic Medical Doctor and comes from Australia) so far have successfully lost weight and maintained their weight loss over the long term.

Women who follow this type of diet, that includes a balanced complete breakfast, report feeling less hungry, especially in the mornings, and having fewer cravings for carbohydrates.

GMO Foods- Do they Really Help to “Stop World Hunger?”

June 11, 2008

Genetically modified organisms (GMO), herbicide-resistant crops, and genetically modified growth hormone (such as rBGH ) pose dangers to our health, our environment and our world–caused by the biotech industry’s imposition on our food chain. I am reminded of an interesting discussion that I had with a prominent researcher at the University of Illinois, whose team of scientists is looking at the effects of broccoli (genetically modified) on liver detoxification enzymes. She is passionate about her work, and the data they are accumulating is intriguing. However, when asked how she felt about the use of GMOs for treating health challenges, when we have research to demonstrate that this same technology damages human health, she responded that at the very least, her genetically engineered broccoli seeds could “help to stop world hunger.”I hear and read about this argument, championed by the biotech industry, frequently–that biotech GMO crops will feed the hungry around the world and will help meet the needs of our growing population. My comment to this is, for the first time ever, our world houses just as many overweight people (1.1 billion) as it does hungry souls. Moreover, hunger experts have demonstrated that countries such as Zambia have pulled themselves out of food crises without the help of genetically engineered seeds and crops. Interestingly, the Bush Administration, backed by fervent support from the biotech industry, challenged the World Trade Organization (WTO) on current European policies that limit the import of GE seeds and foods into the European Union, couching their position as a moral crusade, in part to counter hunger in Africa. However, according to Amadou Kanoute, regional director for Consumers International Office for Africa (CI-ROAF) in Zimbabwe, and Dr. Drinah Nyirenda, executive director of the Program Against Malnutrition (PAM) in Zambia, there is no longer a food crisis in Zambia, the only African country that refused GMO food aid. Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch, summarized the underlying motivation behind the US “fight against hunger.” The Bush administration has sought to link Europe’s food policies with starvation in Africa to justify its WTO case against Europe, which is in fact, really about trying to overcome the growing public antipathy to GMOs worldwide and the related disappointment for US industries who gambled on this technology.

Genetically engineered herbicide-resistant seeds are patented, requiring that farmers either purchase new seeds every year, or pay an annual licensing fee. Such requirements are destructive to the ways in which the majority of African farmers currently maintain their farms. Additionally, we know that the increased use of GE herbicide-resistant crops necessitates an increase in the use of environmental chemicals that harm human health. Not to mention the unknown health effects of ingesting GE crops. Grains such as corn comprise nearly 70% of the average African’s daily caloric intake, as compared to less than 5% of the daily caloric intake of the average American, putting the African population at greater risk of realizing the known and unknown health hazards associated with GE crop production and consumption.

Seventy-five percent of the soybean crop planted in this country last year was Roundup Ready, as was 65% of the cotton and 10 percent of the corn. Perhaps the “fight for hunger” position, championed by the biotech industry, has more to do with money–farmers must purchase a patent-protected herbicide (e.g. Monsanto’s Roundup) from the same company that sells the GE herbicide-resistant product (Monsanto’s GE soy)–and politics, than with the ethical motivation to be socially responsible.

Unfortunately, researchers, most of whom work for the biotech industry, predict that the increased use of herbicides to kill weeds, that is occurring as a result of planting herbicide-resistant crops, will breed highly resistant, super-weeds. This will inevitably require that farmers utilize doubly potent chemicals to maintain their crops, exposing humans to greater degrees of toxic chemical exposure and an unforeseen impact on the incidence and onset of serious health challenges.

Sickness Syndrome Depression: Inflammation in Your Brain

March 19, 2008

Several years ago, I began lecturing to physicians and publishing research on the topic of Sickness Syndrome Depression. At first, no one was all that responsive to the idea that inflammation in the body could cause mental health challenges like depression, anxiety and sleep disorders.

Well…there was a research study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry by the American Psychiatric Association yesterday that supports the use of “anticytokine therapy,” that basically means anti-inflammatory therapy, in the treatment of depression!!! Not surprisingly, the study was done by doctors who have a disclosed relationship with top psychiatric drug company, Eli Lilly.

The Consequences of Fooling Mother Nature

March 14, 2008

On Thursday, US government experts reported that a chemical called diacetyl that is used to give popcorn a butter flavor, can damage the lungs and airways. ConAgra and Weaver Popcorn Co. both agreed to stop using this chemical last year. Orville Redenbacher is one of the brands that is marketed by ConAgra.

Here is a perfect example of the importance of looking at the BIG PICTURE when it comes to healthy living. While some might say that using a butter flavor is healthier since there is less fat in a flavor then in the actual butter, as it turns out, you are better off using the natural butter EVEN THOUGH it has more fat. The same thing goes for hydrogenated oil. Do you remember when everyone, including “medical experts” were encouraging people to use margarine instead of butter because it was more heart healthy? Well now we know that margarine contains hydrogenated oil, which is likely one of the most harmful dietary ingredients known to man-and is ironically one of the most damaging foods you can eat for your heart.
