Integrative Medical Center Enters the Mainstream

September 19, 2008

On Sept. 2, the prestigious Johns Hopkins opened The Johns Hopkins Integrative Medicine and Digestive Center. This is another indication that Naturopathic and Integrative Medicine is coming into the mainstream, with credibility and integrity.  It is not a surprise that the center works primarily on digestive health issues-one of numerous areas where Naturopathic Medicine truly shines.  About 70% of immune system function is housed in the digestive tract, and licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctors are the most skilled-and the most extensively trained- on how to discover the underlying cause of digestive disorders and how to work with the body to support its natural healing response.  One foundational approach is to support detoxification. You can learn more about digestive health and its connection to the immune system by clicking here.

Wyeth’s Nutritional Supplement Claims Under Investigation

September 18, 2008

Wyeth, manufacturer of synthetic hormones for women is under investigation for making a false claim that it’s Centrum Cardio is the only complete supplement that lowers cholesterol.  That’s interesting because in my medical practice we use several different high quality nutritional supplements to lower cholesterol, that do not contain harmful binders, dyes, and things like hydrogenated oil, found in some Centrum products. One of the most profound treatments for lowering cholesterol levels that I use in my practice is a detoxification program that I researched, formulated and published a book about, entitled Clinical Purification.  I test my  patients’ blood before and after the program.  Patients who have been on statin medications for 10 years are able to discontinue them, with full blessing from their primary care doctor and cardiologist. Nature cure at its best.

The Power of Probiotics

August 29, 2008

There is a lot of talk these days about the value of probiotics. Probiotics are the “good bacteria” that are naturally supposed to live in your gut. There are literally hundreds of strains of these bacteria, and they play an important role in immune function, weight loss, vitamin status, detoxification, absorption and digestion. When you take antibiotics, they clear out the “bad bacteria” in your gut, but they also clear out the good bacteria, and like every other system in the body, it is vital that you maintain balance in the gut. You need enough good bacteria in your gut to prevent bad bacteria from taking hold and causing symptoms. This bad bacteria can take many forms which can cause a wide range of symptoms such as a cold gas, bloating, fatigue and many others.

In my practice, one mistake I often see patients making is taking too much of one strain of a good bacteria, like acidophillus, to the exclusion of other good bacteria like Lactobacillus GG and sacharomyces.  When I test their levels of probiotics in their gut, I find that they have an overgrowth of one strain.  So again, it is about balance. If you take a probiotic, rotate which one you take, about every three months. Some of my favorites include ABX Support (especially if you are taking or have recently taken antibiotics), Probiotic Pearls and Culturelle.

Here’s to a healthy and happy gut!

Green Tea Protects Heart Arteries

July 5, 2008

A new research study, led by Dr. Nikolaos Alexopoulos of Athens Medical School in Greece, shows that drinking green tea keeps heart arteries flexible and relaxed-allowing the body to better withstand changes in blood pressure. Researchers compared the effects of drinking 6 grams of green tea per day (3-4 cups), with drinking a diluted caffeine beverage and water. What they found was that those individuals that drank the green tea daily had more relaxed and pliable blood vessels, as demonstrated on ultrasound. And the effects were cumulative and long-lasting. The researchers assessed the green-tea drinkers’ blood vessels two weeks after daily consumption of the tea and discovered that their blood vessels were more dilated then they were at the beginning of the study.

The flavonoids found in green tea reduce inflammation, relax blood vessels, prevent blood clot formation, and act on the endothelial lining of the vessels. Green tea also contains antioxidants that demonstrate cancer-protective effects.

I enjoy green tea extract each morning, as part of a powdered greens blend we carry at LTP Natural Medical Center , that promotes healthy immune function and detoxification.

FDA Admits Mercury in Amalgam Fillings is Harmful to Fetuses and Young Children

June 13, 2008

The Food and Drug Administration has been saying for years that mercury in amalgam fillings is safe. Now they have announced that mercury is harmful “in some.” Perhaps one day the FDA will assert that mercury is harmful to all…In the meantime this is a major step forward in helping to prevent neurological problems in developing children. Read more about this landmark announcement by the FDA by clicking here.

In our medical practice, patients often ask me whether or not they should get their amalgam fillings removed. I do not have a stock answer to this question. It depends on the number of amalgams you have, the state of health you are in, who is going to remove them, what they are going to be replaced with, and how committed you are to following a protocol to help minimize exposure and detoxify the body from any mercury exposure that comes from removing the fillings.

A good first step is to have your urine and/or blood tested for mercury load, and to work closely with a holistic dentist and a licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctor.

GMO Foods- Do they Really Help to “Stop World Hunger?”

June 11, 2008

Genetically modified organisms (GMO), herbicide-resistant crops, and genetically modified growth hormone (such as rBGH ) pose dangers to our health, our environment and our world–caused by the biotech industry’s imposition on our food chain. I am reminded of an interesting discussion that I had with a prominent researcher at the University of Illinois, whose team of scientists is looking at the effects of broccoli (genetically modified) on liver detoxification enzymes. She is passionate about her work, and the data they are accumulating is intriguing. However, when asked how she felt about the use of GMOs for treating health challenges, when we have research to demonstrate that this same technology damages human health, she responded that at the very least, her genetically engineered broccoli seeds could “help to stop world hunger.”I hear and read about this argument, championed by the biotech industry, frequently–that biotech GMO crops will feed the hungry around the world and will help meet the needs of our growing population. My comment to this is, for the first time ever, our world houses just as many overweight people (1.1 billion) as it does hungry souls. Moreover, hunger experts have demonstrated that countries such as Zambia have pulled themselves out of food crises without the help of genetically engineered seeds and crops. Interestingly, the Bush Administration, backed by fervent support from the biotech industry, challenged the World Trade Organization (WTO) on current European policies that limit the import of GE seeds and foods into the European Union, couching their position as a moral crusade, in part to counter hunger in Africa. However, according to Amadou Kanoute, regional director for Consumers International Office for Africa (CI-ROAF) in Zimbabwe, and Dr. Drinah Nyirenda, executive director of the Program Against Malnutrition (PAM) in Zambia, there is no longer a food crisis in Zambia, the only African country that refused GMO food aid. Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch, summarized the underlying motivation behind the US “fight against hunger.” The Bush administration has sought to link Europe’s food policies with starvation in Africa to justify its WTO case against Europe, which is in fact, really about trying to overcome the growing public antipathy to GMOs worldwide and the related disappointment for US industries who gambled on this technology.

Genetically engineered herbicide-resistant seeds are patented, requiring that farmers either purchase new seeds every year, or pay an annual licensing fee. Such requirements are destructive to the ways in which the majority of African farmers currently maintain their farms. Additionally, we know that the increased use of GE herbicide-resistant crops necessitates an increase in the use of environmental chemicals that harm human health. Not to mention the unknown health effects of ingesting GE crops. Grains such as corn comprise nearly 70% of the average African’s daily caloric intake, as compared to less than 5% of the daily caloric intake of the average American, putting the African population at greater risk of realizing the known and unknown health hazards associated with GE crop production and consumption.

Seventy-five percent of the soybean crop planted in this country last year was Roundup Ready, as was 65% of the cotton and 10 percent of the corn. Perhaps the “fight for hunger” position, championed by the biotech industry, has more to do with money–farmers must purchase a patent-protected herbicide (e.g. Monsanto’s Roundup) from the same company that sells the GE herbicide-resistant product (Monsanto’s GE soy)–and politics, than with the ethical motivation to be socially responsible.

Unfortunately, researchers, most of whom work for the biotech industry, predict that the increased use of herbicides to kill weeds, that is occurring as a result of planting herbicide-resistant crops, will breed highly resistant, super-weeds. This will inevitably require that farmers utilize doubly potent chemicals to maintain their crops, exposing humans to greater degrees of toxic chemical exposure and an unforeseen impact on the incidence and onset of serious health challenges.

Detoxification is an Effective Treatment for Environmental Toxins

March 11, 2008

no_drugs.jpgWatching a major news channel earlier this morning I was shocked when the medical correspondent was discussing pharmaceuticals showing up in our water supply. You can read about this issue in this previous blog post. The “medical expert” went on to explain that the frequency by which we are exposed to toxins from drugs in our water supply is an important factor- so even if there is only a trace amount found in each cup (or bottle) you drink, the fact that you drink many cups per day, for years on end- is what is concerning research scientists. THEN…pause…DEEP BREATH..the news correspondent went on to ask the “medical expert” if there was any truth to all the information out there about ways to detoxify the body from such chemicals and the “expert” smirked and said “no…not at all.”

Considering that nearly every cell in the human body has innate detoxification mechanisms in place to remove toxins from the body, paired with the fact that specific medicinal herbs and nutrients are clinically shown to enhance the effects of those mechanisms, there is more than ample justification for employing a safe and well designed, clinically proven detoxification program to assist the body in removing environmental toxins that it is not well equipped to handle. Beyond that are hundreds of thousands of medical records demonstrating the clinical efficacy of employing a sound detoxification program to remove environmental toxins from the body to prevent and treat disease. Keep in mind that our exposure to environmental toxins has increased exponentially over the last century and the body HAS NOT evolved to the point of being able to keep up with this sudden increase in exposure. The consequence of not supporting our body’s innate detoxification mechanisms is DNA damage and an increase of preventable disease.

Prescription Medications under Attack-Do Cholesterol and Blood Sugar Lowering Medications Make Sense?

February 20, 2008

Which Drug? The saying goes that they call it “practicing medicine” for a reason-because doctors don’t have all the answers when it comes to supporting your health and vitality. Case in point…most allopathic doctors prescribe medications as a first line therapy for treating disease. Now major pharmaceutical drugs are coming under attack, questioning the paradigm under which these drugs are prescribed. More often then not, drugs are prescribed to make the numbers on a lab report “look better” without assessing the person as a whole, and evaluating the potential drawbacks of taking a drug to force a lab report to look better. For example, a popular drug prescribed to hundreds of thousands of people called AVANDIA was used to lower blood sugar levels in Diabetics. And while the drug was in fact lowering blood sugar levels (appears, at least on the surface, to be a good thing) it was also increasing the risk of heart attacks. This is a perfect example of the importance of taking the WHOLE person and picture into consideration and not adopting a single minded focus on something as basic as blood sugar, without considering the fundamental CAUSE of why a patient’s blood sugar levels are low in the first place.

Then a few months after the news broke about AVANDIA Merck came out and said that VYTORIN, a popular drug used to lower blood cholesterol levels, did NOT slow the progression of heart disease. But wait..doesn’t high cholesterol CAUSE heart disease? So wouldn’t it make sense that if you block the body’s ability to make or use cholesterol then you treat the cause of the problem? NO- high cholesterol is a number reported on a lab report. Just forcing that number to go down does NOT address the UNDERLYING CAUSE of why your body has high cholesterol levels in the first place. It could be due to an autoimmune condition, or chronic inflammatory response, or damage to blood vessels caused by exposure to environmental toxins…these are all things that need to be assessed and treated and are far more valuable to a patient then simply forcing the body to make less cholesterol. Because guess what- low cholesterol doesn’t guarantee anything. People with low cholesterol get heart disease and so do people with high cholesterol-whether or not they are taking cholesterol lowering medications. For more information and examples regarding the ways in which prescription medications come up short click here

Here is a resource that offers some rationale for why we ought to rethink cholesterol and its role in disease: http://www.thincs.org/news.htm
